According to Mermaid Man, his powers are all in his costume. He uses abilities similar to Aquaman's such as: summon and control sea creatures, high-speed swimming, water balls, and the ability to survive underwater. While Mermaid Man retains all of these abilities, they are not as powerful as they were in his prime. In addition to this, his belt houses a wide array of various weapons, most commonly seen as some kind of beam or ray.

The only one named on the show is the Small Ray, which shrinks things, as well as the reverse large ray dubbed "Wumbo" by Patrick. His belt features other powers such as the Building Obliteration Button, the Chin Cam, and various radioactive beams that cause bizarre mutations and various effects to the subject, such as causing them to suddenly catch on fire, turn inside out, or to be cut in half by scissors.

They are only briefly shown, all afflicting Squidward. Barnacle Boy is a semi-retired superhero sidekick, although he still is more sane and aware than Mermaid Man. He, along with Mermaid Man, are the only real humanoids on the show. Barnacle Boy also exclaims "Mumblin' Morays! Although he turned evil and won against Mermaid Man, forcing him to give in to his demand of being called Barnacle Man, he soon reverted to being called Barnacle Boy.

Mermaid Man, his mentor, treats him as if he were a young boy, in spite of him being an adult. He often calls Mermaid Man an "old coot. Barnacle Man, as he likes to be called, gets a little more respect now. In the same episode, Barnacle Boy mentioned he was so old he had hairs growing out of the wrinkles on his liver spots. He also has a nose similar to Squidward's, although larger. In the video game Battle for Bikini Bottom , it was revealed that Barnacle Boy has a son, a daughter-in-law, and four "screaming" grandchildren.

Barnacle Boy possesses powers similar to Mermaid Man, though he lacks the belt. Mermaid Man creates a panic when he hears the word, "evil," leading the caretaker of the nursing home to throw SpongeBob and Patrick out. While the former crime fighters are going to the cafeteria for lunch, SpongeBob arrives and makes an inspiring speech about how superheroes should not be retired.

After SpongeBob is done with his speech, the caretaker comes again and throws him right out to his house. SpongeBob and Patrick come up with a new plan to free the superheroes from retirement: SpongeBob, disguised as a woman, "complains" about the weight of a purse he is holding, and Patrick, disguised as a criminal, "steals" it.

Suddenly, Barnacle Boy, who is in no way deceived by the disguises, comes to SpongeBob and says that they will always be retired, because there is not enough evil activity for them to thwart. Mermaid Man interrupts him and replies that there is always evil. They start arguing, until SpongeBob interrupts them and says that he and Patrick have painted their invisible boatmobile.

Barnacle Boy decides to end the argument and convinces Mermaid Man that evil is right in front of them. He takes out their rings, and they resume their careers. The newly reunited crime-fighters get into a fight with SpongeBob and Patrick, who are impervious to their attacks and joyed that they have brought their heroes out of retirement. Finally, the heroes are lucky: they are helped by elderly residents of a nursing home, who pick up SpongeBob and Patrick and throw them away from the retirement home.

The duo play checkers, then suddenly, the phone rings. Mermaid Man picks up upside-down, fails to hear the person on the other line, and hangs up, thinking the phone is broken.
